Your Ultimate Guide to Stress-Free Packing (with a Dash of Sass)
By Lyn Taylor, Founder of Lyn Taylor’s Adventure Travel
Let’s face it—packing for a trip can bring on a whole lot of stress, especially for women. While our male counterparts toss a few essentials in a bag and somehow survive just fine, we’re agonising over outfits, weather, shoes, and skin care.
Sound familiar?
After more than 30 years of leading tours and living out of a suitcase, I’ve collected my fair share of packing wins—and a few hilarious fails. Here’s my ultimate guide to help you pack smart, stay stylish, and travel light (without leaving your essentials behind).
✨ The Flight Outfit Dilemma
What to wear on the flight? It’s a question that stresses many of my clients. For me, the answer is simple: comfort is queen.
I always wear:
- Loose-fitting trousers or a maxi skirt
- A flowy top (bonus: I can go braless—thank you, shawl!)
- A lightweight jacket or wrap for warmth and coverage
- Flat, comfy shoes
Pro tip: Wear the same outfit on your return flight. If it works once, it’ll work twice—and that’s one less outfit to pack!
🎒 Hand Luggage Must-Haves
My carry-on is like a survival kit for long-haul flights. I never board without:
- Clean underwear, socks, and a soft bra
- Wet wipes, cleanser, face mist, and moisturiser
- Toothbrush/toothpaste, lip balm, and perfume roll-on
- Eye mask, earplugs, and music or podcasts
- Water bottle (ask the flight attendant to fill it up)
This small pack of essentials keeps me feeling fresh and human, even after 10+ hours in the air.
🧳 Why Does My Suitcase Still Bulge?
Despite all my experience, I still tend to overpack. I roll my clothes, decant my toiletries, and use stuff sacks to organise—but somehow there’s never enough room for souvenirs or spontaneous indulgences.
Sound familiar?
And many women admit to panic-packing, only to arrive and realise they packed their winter wardrobe for a tropical holiday. The solution?
✅ The Packing Checklist You’ll Actually Use
Evernote is a free app that’s changed my travel life. It syncs across devices and lets you create a custom “what to pack” checklist that you can update after every trip. Trust me—it’s a game changer.
Bonus tip: Lay out each outfit (with accessories and shoes) on your bed, snap a photo on your phone, and use it as your outfit guide. No more decision fatigue when you’re running late for dinner.
👠 Shoes, Jewelry & All That Jazz
Shoes are the heaviest and trickiest part of packing. Pick styles that match multiple outfits and limit yourself to two or three pairs, max.
Jewelry? Choose versatile pieces that pair with several outfits. Store them in zip-lock bags alongside each outfit to save time and avoid tangles.
💄 Toiletries Without the Bulk
Here’s where weight adds up fast. Decant shampoos, conditioners, and moisturisers into small containers. Replace your bulky makeup bag with a flat zip-lock pouch (just as protective, way less bulky).
Leave the hairdryer at home if your hotel provides one—and always call ahead or check online.
Don’t lug full jars of vitamins either. Count out just what you need for your trip and store them in a small container. And always pack medication in your carry-on—just in case your checked bag takes a detour.
🧺 Packing Pro Tips to Live By
- Roll your clothes to save space and reduce wrinkles
- Pack your arrival-night outfit on top for easy access
- Use see-through packing cubes or stuff sacks to organise
- Bring zip-lock bags for dirty clothes, wet swimmers, or leaking lotions
- Add a little luxury with a scented candle—great for unwinding after a long day
Final Thoughts
Packing doesn’t have to be a chore. With a bit of planning and a dash of strategy, you can breeze through it and travel with confidence. So say goodbye to overstuffed bags and packing panic, and hello to smart, stylish, stress-free travel.
Because nothing feels better than stepping off a plane feeling organised, fresh, and fabulous.
