Beautiful Sankeien Gardens

To wrap up this truly immersive tour of Japan, we visited the beautiful Sankeien Gardens. Sankeien is a spacious Japanese garden created by Sankei (born as Tomitaro) Hara, a successful Yokohama businessman who built a fortune through the trading of silk and raw silk from the end of the Meiji Era to the Taisho Era.

The garden is approximately 175,000 m in size and is located in a valley facing Tokyo Bay called Sannotani. Sankeien is comprised of two gardens: the outer garden that was opened to the public in 1906 and the inner garden that was used privately by Sankei.

Later we took a bus to Chinatown which was fascinating with many many food places. We then strolled Yokohamas uncrowded waterfront and finished our day with some retail therapy. I have made so many fantastic local connections and putting the final touches on my brand Small Group Tour of Japan coming in October 2025.

September – November and it is truly the perfect time of year to visit Japan. During these months, you can appreciate stunning natural beauty including the colourful leaves in autumn, and less crowds as it heads into winter.
